Turbo Turmeric!

As Autumn draws in on us many of us look for ways to benefit our health during the colder months.  Turmeric (Curcumin) has long been hailed as the "Miracle Herb" due to its amazing wealth of healing properties. Let's have a look at a FEW of the mega benefits of this powerful herb:

Natural Painkiller & Anti-inflammatory/ Reduces severity of arthritis- Turmeric is a wonderful natural painkiller, so much so in fact that a 2012 study found that curcumin (the naturally occuring chemical found in turmeric) was more effective at treating arthritis pain and inflammation than an arthritis drug known as Voltaren.

Antioxidant- Studies have shown that curcumin is very effective in searching for free radicals and neutralising them. If our natural body mechanism is not able to fight with these free radicals, turmeric can assist our body to do so very effectively.

Perfect Post Operation healer- Curcumin is reported to be an immunomodulatory agent. It can reduce inflammation as well as enhance the body’s immune response, it reduces pain and aids the body in recovery from the operation.

Improves digestion and stomach health- Research studies have shown turmeric can stimulate the gallbladder and release bile. This bile helps the body break down and digest food. It also plays an important role in absorbing fats and certain nutrients. Turmeric has also been shown to calm the digestive system, helping to relieve gas and bloating.

Acid reflux- Because turmeric is thought to decrease inflammatory chemicals in the body, it may play a role in relieving or preventing heartburn.

Alleviates depression symptoms-Research shows that curcumin influences many areas involved in anxiety and depression. Curcumin can help balance serotonin, dopamine, glutamate, and noradrenaline. Further, curcumin may benefit brain chemicals, and it can enhance the production of glutathione, an essential antioxidant for brain health.

PMT- Recent studies have shown that the anti-inflammatory property in curcumin helped with the pain occurring in PMS and also modulated brain chemicals and thus alleviated mood changes and depression- Another benefit of turmeric’s analgesic activity is that it does not cause gastric side effects like regular painkillers.

Anti-aging- Research shows that turmeric inhibits a key enzyme (elastase) that reduces the ability of elastin from forming. Elastin, along with collagen, is a protein needed for making the skin smooth and pliable, and also helps it to retain its original position when pinched. It is thought that Turmeric can stimulate the natural glow of your skin, making you look younger! (Bonus!)

Skin conditions- The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities of turmeric may help your psoriasis by controlling flares and other symptoms. it is suggested that it can help with eczema, alopecia, acne scarring, and other skin issues.

The list is soooo endless- we could be here all day!! What we do know is that will be prepping for the colder months with this little miracle herb, will you?
