How can 5-HTP help me?

Here at SNHQ we are frequently asked by our customers about 5-HTP, with lots of people not having heard of it or queries about what it is, so we thought we'd do a run down on 5-HTP for you.

What Is It?

5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is a naturally occurring substance derived from the seed pods of Griffonia simplicifolia, a West African medicinal plant. In us humans, 5-HTP is the immediate nutrient precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin. This means that 5-HTP converts directly into serotonin in the brain

How Does It Work?

5-HTP works in the brain and central nervous system by increasing the production of the chemical serotonin. Serotonin can affect sleep, appetite, temperature, and pain sensation. As 5-HTP increases the forming of serotonin, it is used for several ailments where serotonin is thought to hold an important role including depression, insomnia, obesity, and many other conditions.

Which Conditions Does It Help With?

Serotonin has many important functions, including a role in sleep, appetite, memory, learning, temperature regulation, mood, libido, cardiovascular function, muscle contraction, and hormonal regulation.

What Are The Symptoms Of Low Serotonin Levels?

Low levels of serotonin are most commonly manifested by depressed mood, anxiety, and insomnia. They can also lead to various other complaints and disorders such as:

  • General mood

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Insomnia

  • Weight loss

  • PMT

  • Chronic headaches

  • Migranes
