Z is for..... ZINC! What is Zinc?
Zinc is a trace element that keeps the immune system strong, helps heal wounds, and supports normal growth. But how are low levels of Zinc related to depression and anxiety?
Zinc is often found to be low in the serum of those suffering from depression and anxiety. Low levels of Zinc in the body lower GABA (a neurotransmitter that sends chemical messages through the brain and the nervous system). In numerous studies Zinc supplementation has been shown to have anti-depressant effects as it raises GABA.
Which foods can raise levels of Zinc within the body?
The biggest Zinc food source is found in Oysters! (which may have some relation to the belief that Oysters are an aphrodisiac- they certainly raise Zinc levels which is indeed necessary for a healthy male sperm count!)
Other Zinc rich foods includes crab (and other shellfish) pumpkin seeds, grass fed/organic beef and lamb & dark chocolate, nuts and legumes.
We heard a wonderful man speaking on Radio 4 yesterday having waited months and months to be seen for his depression so he took matters into his own hands and upped his Zinc and found that was the only boost he needed.... fascinating.
Have a great day all x SNHQ
